For the ♥ of Pups

I have some exciting news for you!  Thanks to a friend of mine, K. Larsen,  who has a few e-books of her own available, I am finally ready to begin putting my very first e-book together!  It’s going to have healthy pup treat recipes!  I can’t wait to share it with you!

November of 2010, we brought home a new family member.  Unfortunately, we also brought home a bad case of giardia.  After many trips to the vet,  and still no luck in controlling the explosions of diarrhea, I mentioned to the vet I wanted to feed my pup homemade rice and chicken to see if that would help.  The explosions cleared within a week!  No more medications and no more pet store food for us!

At Lil Roo’s 1 year check up, she was in excellent health and perfect weight!   We discussed Lil Roo’s diet with the vet, we got the green light to continue!  We supplement with calcium, bone meal, vitamin C, and nutritional yeast to ensure all nutrient and mineral requirements are being met.  Their diets consist of lean meats, healthy fats, lots of fresh fruit and veggies, and no gluten.

I have been making all their food and treats since!  No more smelly gas, no more diarrhea!

Many people have commented on how soft and shiny her fur is!

Lil Roo & Auhmi

Lil Roo & Auhmi

Auhmi joined us this year since Lil Roo was really, really, wanting a playmate.  She is a year younger than Roo.  Together they not only inspire me to create things in the kitchen for them, they drive me crazy while I’m doing it!  (Like right now, I’ve got sweet potato chewies dehydrating in the oven and they can’t stop running back and forth to the kitchen!)

UMM… YUM! More on gluten free pup food…

Image

From left to right:

1) Ground chicken, gluten-free shells, spinach

2) Lean ground beef, peas and carrots with gluten-free shells

3) Gluten free peanut butter pup treats…pb with carob chips, pb sprinkled cinnamon, and regular pb.  They can not get enough of these!

4) GF pumpkin gf oat treats!  Helps keep them ‘regular’ so, if you make anything with pumpkin, don’t over do it! (Especially if you have paper trained pups, cause you could have a mess on your hands!)

5) Lean ground beef, brown rice, corn, peas, green beans, and spinach!

They also get a daily vitamin to make sure they are getting all the minerals needed in a pups diet!  Our vet is right on board with us and how we feed “the girls.”  Lil Roo is about 15 months and just had her check up, has maintained her weight to the ounce for a year!  Both of their fur is sooo soft from the diet and natural soap I use to bathe them!

Natural Homemade Puppy Food – Great for fur!

I always make homemade, all natural food for my lil pups.  Their coats are amazingly soft, shiny, and dander free!  We actually have only had our second pup for two weeks.  When we first got her, her fur was a little coarse compared to our pup we’ve had for a year.  We did the switch-a-roo in her diet within a couple days of bringing her home and her fur is just like our other pups!

I like to make their food about every 5 days.  I switch up the proteins each time and incorporate different grains, all gluten free.  I use a good amount of mixed veggies in their food.  For snacks, I like to feed them raw foods.  They love bananas, blueberries, strawberries, carrots, lettuce, tomato, cucumber and cant get enough of their gluten free treats!  (We been experimenting, so far, peanut butter bacon treats rank #1)

Today’s food prep consisted of barley, lean ground beef, mixed veggies, seasoned with curry! Let’s call it “Curried beef-barley!”

I am compiling all of my yummy pup recipes to put together in a book.  My goal is to have it complete in the next 12 months!

So, I made these treats for Lil Roo and Auhmi last week.  They devoured them so fast I had to double batch it this time! Made with all natural peanut butter, oat flour, egg, nitrite free bacon bits, and water…As you can see, they LOVE them! THey wouldn’t leave me alone while I was making them!  Two happy pups!
